Simms Fishing Products solidified its position as the top manufacturer of outerwear for serious anglers, winning three awards – including the prestigious “Best of Show” – at the International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD) show held last week in New Orleans.

Simms was the show’s big winner in the New Product Showcase sponsored by Angling Trade Magazine and MidCurrent. The newly designed Freestone Stockingfoot Waders captured the “Best Wading Gear” award while the ProDry™ GORE-TEX® suit took home the award for “Best Outerwear.”

You'd think it'd be difficult to bring more spice and snap to New Orleans, but that's exactly what Simms Fishing Products is planning for the 2011 International Fly Tackle Dealer show that gets underway August 18.

Simms arms anglers with facts about rubber-soled boots

Anglers across the country are gearing up for the start of a spring fishing season that will likely be different than past seasons – at least where gear is involved.

From Maine to Alaska, anglers wading into waters in 2011 will have to contend with regulations and advisories concerning the use of felt-bottomed wading boots. Maryland and Vermont have banned the use of felt-soled waders and wading boots starting this year and Alaska is set to follow suit in 2012. At least three other states – Oregon, Montana and Maine – are considering bans on felt-soled boots that have been implicated in the spread of aquatic nuisance species like Didymo (or “rock snot”).

Simms Fishing Products took the fly-fishing industry’s lead on this issue in 2009 – voluntarily removing felt-bottomed wading boots from their product line. As the industry’s leader in Vibram® soled wading boots, Simms offers these tips and tactics for anglers figuring out how best to go felt-free this year as the “rubber meets the rowed.”

ALL RUBBER IS NOT CREATED EQUAL: Manufacturers have been making rubber-soled boots for years, but recent advancements in rubber-making technology have produced new rubber compounds designed for maximum grip in aquatic environments. Simms was the first fly-fishing manufacturer to partner with Vibram® to produce a rubber compound that provides ultimate traction.
PICK A PATTERN: The lug pattern on the sole of a rubber boot can greatly affect how much traction a boot affords an angler. Look for aggressive tread patterns that provide grip in multiple directions.
STUD AND CLEAT OPTIONS: Felt soles provided maximum grip when they were studded. The same holds true for rubber boots. Many of today’s rubber-soled boots are equipped to handle screw-in studs and cleats. Simms offers HardBite™ Studs and Star Cleats, as well as molded AlumiBite™ Cleats that are easily inserted into the sole of the boots.
WHAT TO DO WITH OLD BOOTS: Some cobblers are equipped to resole old wading boots with new rubber soles. Check this link for a list of cobblers authorized to resole boots with Vibram® soles. Additionally, old boots loaded with a few flowers make for nice centerpieces on tables at Trout Unlimited banquets or in fishing lodges.
KEEP IT CLEAN: While felt soles have been implicated in the spread of aquatic nuisance species, simply switching to rubber-soled boots does not make the problem go away. Now, more than ever, anglers are urged to “Inspect, Clean and Dry” all fishing gear – not just wading boots – after each use. Anglers are encouraged to log on to the Clean Angling Coalition's site for more information, as well as cleaning and drying tips.
KNOW THE LAWS: Maryland’s felt ban goes into effect March 21 of this year. Vermont’s felt ban begins April 1. Alaska goes felt-free across the state on January 1, 2012. New Zealand had been felt-free for several years. Other states and provinces are expected to follow.

While there are a number of flora and fauna that are considered Aquatic Nuisance Species, below are links to some of the specific species that anglers might be exposed to while fishing the waterways of North America.

Zebra mussels began as a Great Lakes problem and the Great Lakes Information Network has lots of information about the pesky critters.

In addition, here are links to two water-borne pathogens that can threaten fish population and can be transferred by unsuspecting anglers to various bodies of water.

VHS, or Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia, is a deadly fish virus and an invasive species that is threatening fish populations around North America. VHS was diagnosed for the first time in the Great Lakes as the cause of large fish kills in lakes Huron, St. Clair, Erie, Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. Maintained by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, "VHS 101" has everything you need to know.

Whirling disease affects salmonid populations throughout much of their range in North America.

Featuring the Simms Streamtread™ traction sole designed with Vibram® Idrogrip™ technology, the Simms wading boots deliver all of the performance attributes of traditional felt-soled waders while being significantly more environmentally friendly. Six footwear models will come with Vibram® soles, including a new-for-2009 women’s boot. Prices begin at $129.95.

DENVER, Colorado (Sept. 14, 2008) – Simms® president K.C. Walsh announced that Simms would stop using felt as a material for soles on its wading boots effective with the launch of the 2010 line.

Walsh made the announcement at a news conference held at the Flyfishing Retailer Expo. He said Simms’ decision to do away with felt is a result of the material being implicated in the spread of aquatic nuisance species and fish-killing disease. Walsh noted that anglers have always been among the nation’s first wave of conservationists, and with options to felt now on the market, anglers had a responsibility to both the resource and the tradition of angling to cease their use of felt.

“We know felt is not the only material that has spread invasive species and disease,” Walsh said, “but felt is surely part of the problem. At Simms, we’ve decided to be part of the solution.”

Late last week, national conservation leader Trout Unlimited asked at its annual meeting that wading boot manufacturers phase out felt by 2011. Simms is eager to lead the charge.

Walsh’s announcement comes as Simms unveils the world’s first fishing-specific Vibram-soled wading boots. For 2009, Simms will offer six boot models, a wading sandal and a wading shoe with soles featuring Vibram® Streamtread™ soles. Additionally, Simms boots and waders are designed with “CleanStream™ technology,” a design philosophy that uses materials and production techniques making it more difficult for microorganisms to attach and makes wading gear easier to properly clean.

Simms and Vibram have worked together to produce an ultra-grippy, super-sticky rubber sole that works as well as felt in virtually all wet and aquatic conditions. The partnership between Vibram and Simms has resulted in a boot that combines the best performance features of felt with the environmental benefits of rubber. The new soles have been field tested extensively and will perform far, far better than any rubber soled fishing footwear currently on the market.

New Zealand has placed a ban on felt boots for the upcoming 2008 season. A number of U.S. states where aquatic nuisance species are found have reportedly discussed the possibility of outlawing felt-soles.

Additionally, Simms has agreed to work with conservation organizations and other companies within the fishing industry to develop a certification process to highlight gear designed to help prevent the spread of ANS and disease.

Aquatic invaders subject of workshop

BOZEMAN, Montana – The Madison-Gallatin chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Headwaters chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers will co-host a special workshop on aquatic invasive species on May 29 at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman.

The workshop - sponsored by Bozeman-based Simms Fishing Products - is free and open to the public. It begins at 7 p.m. and will address the growing problem of aquatic invasives and the role anglers, boaters and others can play in stopping the spread.

Among the experts scheduled to speak at the event are Bob Wiltshire, Center for Aquatic Nuisance Species, Eileen Ryce, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Aquatic Nuisance Species Coordinator and Joe Starinchak, Outreach Coordinator for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s National Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force.

Many of Montana and the county’s outstanding recreational fisheries are under assault from aquatic invaders. Insipid organisms like didymo (or “rock snot”), whirling disease and New Zealand mud snails threaten the biodiversity of numerous treasured natural resources. Collectively, invasive species (both terrestrial and aquatic) cost our country over $100 billion in damages every year.

Many of the county’s outstanding recreational fisheries are under assault from aquatic invaders. Insipid organisms like didymo (or “rock snot”), whirling disease and New Zealand mud snails threaten the biodiversity of numerous treasured natural resources. To stop the spread of nuisance species, anglers and all recreational enthusiasts are urged to check their gear, clean their gear, and dry their gear after every excursion.

“Anglers and fishing groups have historically fought the good fight to conserve and improve our nation’s waterways,” said K.C. Walsh, president of Simms. “Every angler has a responsibility to the resource to do whatever can be done to stop the spread of invasive species.”

Simms, a partner in the Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers project sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, recommends that anglers clean their gear (waders, boots, wading staffs and nets) after each use. To properly clean equipment:

• Check before leaving a river or stream. While streamside, remove all obvious clumps of algae and look for hidden clumps. If you find any at a later time, dispose all material in the trash. Brush off excess dirt, mud and other debris from boots (take out removable inner soles), waders, wading staff and net.
• Clean with hot water (at least 40° C or 104° F) and rinse thoroughly.
• Dry equipment. If possible, allow for five days of drying time before entering new waters.
• Minimize gear used in affected waters in non-affected waters. Some anglers are buying gear dedicated just for certain streams, to reduce the risk of spreading invaders. Companies like Simms are offering waders and wading boots that are easy to clean and specifically designed to reduce absorbency.

Not all attempts at disinfection may wipe out all invasive species. Anglers are urged to check with state fish and wildlife agencies for specific cleaning instructions. Anglers are reminded to report any suspected discoveries of invasive species to their local wildlife agencies as soon as possible.

Former Burlington (Vt.) Free-Press outdoor editor joins specialty firm
with client base in outdoor recreation and adventure travel markets

WAITSFIELD, VERMONT (March 4, 2008) – Pale Morning Media, a national communications firm specializing in the world of outdoor adventure, welcomes Matt Crawford as a public relations associate beginning this week.

Most recently, Crawford was the outdoors editor for the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press. A passionate hunter, angler and skier, Crawford’s professional resume includes two decades of daily newspaper experience, an acute understanding of outdoor recreation trends and issues, and considerable expertise in emerging electronic media.
